To help us understand and sort through what is going on in Syria, what this outbreak of violence means and what is behind it, we spoke to Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi, who is a well-known scholar on Syria and expert on the region.
Dr. Aymenn Al-Tamimi is an associate fellow at the International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence. He has extensive experience analyzing Syria and Middle East politics, jihadist movements and the Islamic State. His work spans roles with organizations such as the Middle East Forum, and he investigates the Islamic State's operations and war crimes and has done so for quite some time. He has also contributed as a translator and researcher for prominent media outlets and academic institutions, including The New York Times and Al Jazeera. He joins us tonight to discuss primarily the seemingly unexpected outbreak and continuously escalating violence that is taking place in Syria, consuming large parts of the Syrian territory and is now drawing in, quite predictably, the role of some regional powers as well as the United States. It's a complex situation, it's a changing situation, and we are happy to have him here to help us sort through it.
