Phew! That was a crazy week. We’re all breathing again…
Feel free to relax and read what we at System Update covered for its past five shows — which we know you dutifully watched, took notes on, and shared vigorously across social media. Glenn will be hosting a pop quiz sometime soon. Strange Brazilian candy will be awarded to an unlucky few.
As you might’ve surmised, this is a new thing: our Locals newsletter is being reworked with a new flair to accompany all of the journalism we’ve been publishing here. We want this to feel even more like a real community that rewards our supporters, where you look forward to hearing from us and we try to share the spotlight. Part of that starts with this revamped weekly newsletter.
Let’s break down what exactly you can expect from us with this thing — our first of many new (or renewed) Locals-exclusive goodies…
First, let’s talk shop:
System Update may be beautiful on the outside, but in order to get everything out on time, our grittier work behind the scenes is equally important. So, we’re going to be showing our Locals subscribers more of that: more of our prep process, more of our studio, and more of the stuff that makes System Update special.
Second, a reinvigorated weekly roundup:
Let’s be real: we cover a lot of ground in a given week. When we started, the shows were supposed to be 60 minutes long. Now, they're running closer to 90 or even longer.
We also understand that you’re all very busy — and so are we. Some of you live in California and can’t see the full show before you get away from work, while others are in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, and myriad other places. Maybe we air too late for you, or maybe we’re on a little earlier than you’d like. That’s fine!
Introducing our revamped Weekly Roundup, within which you’ll find some of our key clips and moments. That being said, we always encourage our loyal viewers and listeners to watch our full show on Rumble or listen to it on all of your favorite podcasting platforms 12 hours after airing.

Third, some quality reading recs:
This week, a few of our staff had some recommendations for interesting articles and books. It’s possible that you’ll learn how boring we are, but that’s a risk we’re willing to run with:
Glenn, our resident Matrix lover — but only the first one:
His X // Twitter feed. Apparently, he’s been feeding wild monkeys that he’s forcing us to tell you about in this post. Please go like it. If you don’t, we don’t get paid…
Victor, Supreme Director of this Updating System:
There’s a newer book by Ha-Joon Chang, an economics professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies, called Edible Economics: A Hungry Economist Explains the World. He thinks it’s a ravenous read. Do you share his taste?
Meagan, Grand Vizier of Propaganda & Distribution:
This NYT article from 2016 about how women are just as likely as men to win elections when they run for office. It should be good news that sexism no longer plays a significant role at the ballot box, but some Harris supporters are already claiming misogyny could cost her the election.
Cole, the team’s youthful anarchist:
In keeping with his nutso politics, he’s recommending the late David Graeber’s Debt: The First 5,000 Years.
Recently graduated from college, we see why Cole is so keen on having us all forgive his useless political science degree.
Fourth, live question submissions:
Stay tuned — and tune in LIVE! We’re working on a feature that allows you, should you choose, to send or call in with live videos to the team for our Locals After-Show.
We’ll see you next week…
